Supplementation 101: What to Look For
When it comes to nutrition, perfect should never be your goal. Diets are imperfect by nature, and something that we tend to overcomplicate. In fact you can make a strong case that much of the wisdom in modern nutritional science can be boiled down to a few core principles.
Eat a variety of plant foods (emphasis on variety), limit the process and refined options, and listen to your body.
The problem? Our North American diet is simply not as nutritious as it used to be, and there are entire categories of nutrients that we’re just not getting enough of. Even our soil has been taking a hit, as a recent study from the Kushi Institute found that it contains close to 30% less key nutrients then in years past. Finding ways to reintroduce these missing nutrients into our diets should be a high priority!
When it comes to our diets, diversity matters. Each and every food features a powerful combination of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrient (Greek; “plant” nutrients) with some serious health-boosting potential. Simply increasing the variation in our diet will expose our bodies to entire new categories of nutrients, each with their own unique claim to fame.
Easy, right?
Well not so much, and here’s where supplements come in. It is not always feasible to consume such a wide variety of foods on a consistent basis. Unfortunately, busy lifestyles and tight budgets pose significant barriers to a diverse nutrient intake, causing us to place much of the burden on only a handful of fruits and vegetables. In fact, in North America 2/3rds of our phytonutrient intake comes from only four sources, tomato, orange, carrot, and strawberry, all of which are great but unfortunately not sufficient.
If done right, supplementation can provide an incredible boost, delivering a quantity and diversity of nutrients that is simply hard to match through diet alone.
Rich in colourful ingredients that together provide a range of benefits. Diversity in our diet is clearly missing, so it’s important to look for a supplement like greens+, that is packed with 23 superfoods, veggies, fruits and botanical extracts that provide your body with a rich source of nutrients and wide antioxidant protection. In addition to helping fill in nutrient gaps, greens+ can also help to support the immune system, thanks to being rich in anti-viral quercetin, plus added licorice and ginseng. Additionally, an acidic diet is taxing to the immune system—greens+ is the ONLY superfood that’s been proven to combat dietary acid load (the effects of an acidic diet).
Standardized dosages. By using standardized extracts, companies guarantee exactly how much of the active ingredients are present in their product, allowing for a clinically-proven dosage in each and every serving!
